The City of Ashland, Oregon is situated at the southern tip of the Rogue Valley, along Interstate 5, approximately 15 miles north of the Oregon-California border. Located in the foothills of the Siskiyou Mountains, Ashland is one of the most picturesque communities in the Pacific Northwest. A magnet for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers and environmentalists, Ashland is also internationally known for world class theater companies, which draw in excess of 400,000 visitors each year. The City is also at the center of major recreational amenities; nearby Mt. Ashland Ski Area provides a variety of summer and winter activities which includes skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking and backpacking opportunities. The Northern California Redwoods, Rogue River Recreational Area, Oregon Caves, Crater Lake National Park and Oregon Sand Dunes are all within easy driving distance of Ashland.
The City of Ashland operates under the strong Mayor – Council form of government with the Mayor elected for a four-year term and six Council Members elected, at-large, for four-year overlapping terms. The Director, Information Technology is appointed by the Mayor, with confirmation required by a majority of the City Council. Under direction of the City Administrator, the Director is responsible for managing all aspects of technology services. The Information Technology Department is functionally divided into two operations, one of which supports internal technology services for the municipal government and the other to support operations of the Ashland Fiber Network (AFN) a high-speed internet utility. The Director serves as a member of the City’s senior management team and has oversight responsibilities for a staff of 15.5 FTE’s and a $1.4 million operating budget, exclusive of debt service for AFN (which totals $15 million). AFN currently has in excess of 4,200 customers and is operated in conjunction with several private Internet Service Providers (ISP’s); AFN dedicated personnel responded to almost 4,300 calls for service in the past year. |

| Requirements |
The successful candidate will possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems/Technology, Business/Public Administration or a related field, along with seven to ten years of experience in the Information Technology or telecommunications field. A Master’s degree and advanced management training is preferred. The individual must have a demonstrated record of progressively responsible positions in building information technology teams, developing business plans in a rapidly changing industry, working effectively across all levels of an organization, creating an end-user service orientation, and optimizing limited resources, preferably in the public sector.
Demonstrated knowledge, skills and ability working with public officials, industry representatives, civic groups, and technical experts is required. Knowledge and experience in planning, forecasting, organizational analysis, and a minimum of five years’ experience in a senior or executive level management position are also a must. Professional designations or certifications are desirable and will be considered favorably in the selection process. |
